5/21/2017 0 Comments What is my CAS Project? For my CAS Project, I decided to do something that wouldn't just benefit me, but the community around me. After a lot of brainstorming and planning to see what would be feasible in the amount of time I have, I decided to combine my passion for creativity with my passion for community service and create a project based on that. In order to combine these two, I joined together with a group of students who were planning on doing work at a school which did not have many resources and was close to falling apart, and decided that together, we would give these children a place they can enjoy. This place would be a library, and we would create this quiet space for them. Many of the children came from families who didn't treat them well, or they were put here because other better schools were too far. Because of this, I decided I wanted to give them a place they can look forward to each day, and enjoy it for academic and personal purposes. InvestigationBefore beginning the actual process of building the library, certain steps needed to be planned so that we didn't jump into this project completely unprepared. First, we met with a lady who works closely with this school and other organization by doing community service. We set up a time where we all met and we discussed everything from decorations, to how we can raise money, to how to get the kids involved. On our own time, we looked up ideas in relation to decoration and how we want to set up the library space. We found lots of cute, cheap ways to make furniture, such as painting tires and putting cushions in them, and we decided this step would come near the end of the project so we can focus more on the actual library aspect. We also needed to investigate what area within the school would be good enough, so we met with the principal of the school and his wife in order to discuss these details. He mentioned that they have a room filled with sowing supplies that is never used, and that right next to it is a little outdoor area, and immediately we knew it would be perfect. After seeing and investigating the space, we knew we could get started.
After we got permission from the school to begin, we needed to plan out how we would start and what our timeline would be. We decided all together that Wednesdays after school wold be the best time to go, since it would give us some time to see the children (since their school day ends at 2:30) and we would overall have more time to work. In order to get all the materials we needed to create the library, we needed money, so we had to plan out how to raise money. We figured the most creative way to do this would be to do something related to books! This is why we decided a "Read a Thon" would be perfect. In order to do this, along with our grownup sponsor, we set a date (September 27) to be the day we finish the money collection. It would work as follows:
DemonstrationBecause this project would take more than the one month CAS requirement, it is not done and still in process. Due to this, here I will explain what has been completed so far:
